KEVLAR, SUPER ALLY OF BIKERS: WE EXPLAIN EVERYTHING!
Discovered 50 years ago, aramid fiber is a very strong, light and durable synthetic fiber. Marketed in particular by the American company Dupont de Nemours under the name “Kevlar”, this material very quickly imposed itself as a standard in motorcycle equipment due to the extreme resistance it provides.
But what exactly is Kevlar?
| Poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) (PPD-T) is a thermoplastic polymer better known as “Kevlar”. It is a material formed by combining para-phenylenediamine and terephthaloyl chloride. This gives the aromatic polyamide (aramid) yarn. Kevlar is a very light fiber and 20 times stronger than steel. | ![]() |
And the protection of the motorcyclist in all this?
Kevlar is above all useful to prevent the phenomenon of abrasion. Abrasion is a major danger for motorcyclists in the event of a fall, because unlike hands and head whose regulations require mandatory equipment, nothing is imposed in terms of protective clothing for the body. With the growing interest in motorcycling, we are seeing more and more motorcyclists equipped with simple fabric clothing without any real protection against abrasion or burns when the motorcyclist's skin rubs on the asphalt.
This can lead to extremely severe level 3 burns, where the entire dermis and epidermis are destroyed. The skin graft then turns out to be the only alternative because healing becomes impossible.
In order to protect yourself effectively, it is therefore necessary to find an anti-abrasion garment combining lightness, resistance to tearing as well as to breaking, while maintaining a biker spirit. You can find anti-abrasion clothing on the market with additional accessories for maximum safety, such as protections for the shoulders, back (dorsal), elbows and knees.
The hulls and protections of this equipment have not been placed randomly. Although their full use is often preferred on the circuit, they can be homologated and are extremely important in the event of a fall or impact in a daily context.
What about the traditional leather jacket?
As we know, some bikers have an unconditional love for leather! In addition to giving an atypical look much appreciated by the wearer, leather is a very solid material that offers optimal protection.
For years now, everyone has known about the great resistance of leather to abrasion. This is also one of the main reasons why it is widely used, especially in competition.
Also, in addition to these essential qualities, modern leather jackets offer new properties such as thermal linings or even numerous pocket possibilities.
Would Kevlar be a good alternative to traditional leather?
Effectively. Although modern leather jackets have gained in lightness and comfort thanks to the innovations of the new removable liners, they are still a step below textile jackets in the face of bad weather. Indeed, today motorcycle jackets have become very advanced technically, in particular with regard to the textile and its impermeability to rain.
Most of the time, textile jackets are light and allow perspiration to evaporate while being waterproof, which means that jackets equipped with a waterproof and breathable membrane can be worn in summer while protecting from the rain. . Thus, they are an excellent alternative to leather when conditions permit.
Be aware that the more you go upmarket, the more your textile jacket will be equipped to resist in the event of an accident.
So Kevlar is the perfect material for my motorcycle jacket!
It is true that, thanks to the exceptional resistance that a Kevlar lining gives to a shell textile jacket, while retaining the waterproof and breathable properties of the latter, opting for this material then seems to be a most advisable choice.
Textile motorcycle gear lined with Kevlar therefore appears to be a perfect alternative, in particular to maintain freshness, comfort and optimal protection when temperatures rise and become unsuitable for the use of a leather jacket.
